I didn’t die easily. For me, death was pretty much like everything had been in my life—complicated and ambiguous.
The day was dragging out like any other day. My little sister had been whining to my mother about summer camp since the night before, so I did my best to avoid them. My best friend was planning to spend the night, and she and her brother had been hanging out in our pool most of the afternoon.
“I really hate him being here.” Ally rolled her eyes as she laid on her beach towel beside me. She nodded vaguely in her brother’s direction.
I looked across the pool at the boy who had just pulled his long, lean body out of the water on the deep end. He shook his head for a second, sending splashes of water everywhere. As he ran his hand through his damp, dark brown hair, I had the slightest urge to go rake my fingers through it too.
I batted away my thoughts. AJ Stockwell was the last boy I wanted to get mixed up with. Although he was undeniably gorgeous, he had run through a string of four girls during the last school year alone. When he wasn’t loving and leaving his girlfriends, he holed up in his room, building and painting ridiculous model boats. Besides all that, he was my best friend’s brother, so he was sort of off-limits from the get go.
“It’s fine, Al.” I rolled over on my stomach and straightened the back of my swimsuit bottoms. “He just cut the grass, so my dad invited him to take a swim. No big deal.”
“Ugh. It’s a big deal to me,” Ally complained. “I mean, I can’t talk about anything with him around.”
“Relax. He’ll be out of here soon, I’m sure.” I craned my neck, looking at AJ again. “Besides, he’s not bad to look at.”
“Oh, give me a break, Tinley.” Ally turned over on her belly as well. She leaned her shoulder against mine and brought her voice to a whisper. “Didn’t I tell you he just broke up with Amanda? After he dumped Natalie, and Sarah, and—”
“Yeah. I get it. You’ve warned me a thousand times about how much of a creep he is to girls. One cheerleader after another. I would never get involved with someone like him, even if he wasn’t related to you.”
“He’s like a psychopath or something. I swear. He dates these girls for, like, a minute, and then he dumps them. It’s like he’s test driving them or something.”
“Well, he’s pretty hot, so I guess he has that option.”
“Or, maybe, these girls get one look at his toy boat collection and run for the hills screaming.” Ally laughed and moved onto her knees. She stuffed her sunglasses and sunblock into her bag. “I don’t know about you, but I’ve had enough of this sun, and enough of you drooling over my disgusting brother. Let’s go up to your room. I want to check out my Instagram anyway.”
“Drooling? That’s extreme.” I flopped over onto my back again and sat up just as AJ walked by. “Oh. Hey.” I squinted up at him.
“You know I can hear every word you say, Ally? Your voice isn’t exactly the most discreet sound in the neighborhood.” AJ wrapped a towel around his waist as he stood there. “I have my reasons for everything I do, and spreading rumors about me only makes you look like an idiot.”
“It takes one to know one.” Ally jumped to her feet, spewing probably the oldest and dumbest comeback known to man.
“That’s just about the most juvenile thing I’ve heard you say, like, ever, Al.” AJ pulled on a tight gray t-shirt before he sat in a nearby deck chair. He nodded to me. “Hey, Tinley.”
Did he just blush? No, Tinley, that’s a sunburn.
“Hi.” I quickly threw on my cover-up before I stood up. “Um, thanks for doing the lawn.”
“No problem.” AJ shot me a gorgeous smile. The dimples on his cheeks seemed to ripple as he talked. “I know your dad’s been busy with that new book of his.”
“True.” I nodded. “I hate mowing, so it was either you or call the gardeners back.”
My parents had fired our weekly gardeners at the beginning of the summer. They were constantly leaving the back gate open, letting our Golden Retriever run free in the neighborhood.
My parents thought my twelve-year-old sister was too young to handle the lawn mower, and my dad had been busy lately writing his latest novel. Plus, my mom swore she had never mown a lawn in her life. So it was up to AJ or me. I always talked them into opting for AJ.
“Come on, Tinley.” Ally grabbed my hand and started tugging me away from the pool.
“I’ll see you around then.” AJ winked in my direction as we were leaving.
Ally dramatically rolled her eyes in response.
“If she sees you first, even from a mile away, I promise you won’t see her around,” she teased her brother.
“Again with the brilliant one-liners, Al.” AJ wadded up his towel and threw it under his arm. He touched my arm as he stood up. “Tell your folks I said thanks for letting me hang out by your pool.”
“I will.” I stood still, despite Ally yanking on my arm.
“Later.” AJ nodded to me one more time before he hopped our six-foot gate on his way out of our yard.
Ally and I tossed on our flip flops before we went through the back door. My mom was really fussy about not getting marks on the floors, especially from pool water. My dad had just restored the original hardwood throughout our Victorian-era, five-bedroom house the previous year. Homes like ours dotted the Chicago suburb of Waybridge, and my parents claimed ours was one of the most authentic restorations in the area.
I couldn’t have cared less about things like that. To me, the old home always felt drafty, and our heating and air never seemed to work as efficiently as the systems inside the modern subdivision houses. I always envied the homes where some of my friends lived on the outskirts of town. But, my parents were in love with ours, and my vote didn’t count much…

Review of Verseborn (Book 2 in the Earthborn Series) by PM Hernandez

Following directly on from the closing scenes of Earthborn, Addie is on her way to Ayezh with Daxon. Unbeknown to her Brock and Trig are hot on her heels, despite her instruction to the contrary. Forced into the spotlight of an unknown world will she be be able to keep to her mission to rescue Abram?  What are Daxon’s true intentions? Will she be welcomed with open arms by her long lost family?

If Earthborn was the scene setter, Verseborn is the payoff.  It’s a well woven tale of protocol, betrayal, daring rescue attempts and of course all topped off with Addie’s trademark snark.  Her struggles with fitting into a society where despite her lofty title she is little more than a half breed, or Verseborn, are immense.  Revered and reviled in equal measures she holds great power but she is also seen as little more as the next greatest breeding machine to the family that will bring her grandfather most honour. Daxon appears to be her unlikely saviour but can he be trusted to be doing anything more than securing his family’s greatness?  Ancient family rifts run high and Addie is left spinning with both who she should trust and how she can also factor in her father’s potential rescue.  Brock who is used to being classed as Elite, the best of the military on Earth, now finds himself struggling to be classed as even mediocre against the pure Ayezhni.  For the first time in his life he is faced with crippling self doubt, realising that he has nothing to bring to  the table when it comes to being an acceptable suitor for Addie.  Is love simply enough?

I have to say that I loved this book.  The pace has little in the way of let up and the final set piece is nothing short of epic.  The story will have your heart breaking for both Addie and Brock in different ways, especially when Addie’s full potential is realised in the most cataclysmic way.  I could have kept on reading, but then I suppose I would have had the opportunity to be excited for book 3!

Review of Faye Magic (Sector 16 The Othala Witch Collection) by Jo Michaels

Welcome to the world of Sector 16, a place where every 10 years each 19 year old girl must fight to the death to win the coveted title of consort to the Reagent. This was never the path that Morgan Le Faye Woodenson was meant to take; but the early death of the Reagents current consort before the 10 years cycle had completed, throws Faye’s world into chaos.

She is happy, living with her potion maker father and is in love with her boyfriend Sawyer.  When the reality of her situation arrives she and Sawyer plan to flee, she packs for her journey and discovers a strange potion locked away, it must be something worth taking if it’s locked away right?  All packed up and ready to go, instead of rendezvousing with Sawyer, she is met by palace guards to take her to the training grounds – she is too late.

Thrown in with the other unsuspecting 19 year old girls they are forced into training for the macabre trial she must undertake, although she is distracted in her training by the Reagents guard Grant, to whom she has a greater pull toward than she has ever known.  But she’s in love with Sawyer, what’s a girl to do?

When she least expects she is thrown into the trials for real and must fight for everything she holds dear, her family, her new found friends and her freedom.

What comes next is so full of twists and amazing set pieces, I wouldn’t dream of summarising further!  Despite being a strong contender for the trials, Faye is actually incredibly vulnerable, she has had a pretty sheltered and happy upbringing, it stands to reason she wants to try and fit as many life experiences as she can into what little time she potentially has left.  I loved her as a character and the fact that she doesn’t have all the answers and that her actions do directly impact on others, made her relatable.  The romance is steamy and the peril is real, I couldn’t put it down, until sleep eventually won the argument, but it was picked back up as soon as I could.

This story has so many elements to it and finishes off in a very different way to how it begins.  Yes, you could give comparisons to similar stories in the genre, but for me it became so much more. The subtle comedy moments woven in gave it a lightheartedness at times, which you didn’t know you needed until they made you laugh out loud (well they did for me any way, perhaps it’s my macabre sense of humour.)  I honestly could have kept on reading and reading.  A highly commended 5* from me.

It’s a serial series, and there are ten seasons, so there are several covers to see. Stay with it!

Once upon a time, in a land far, far away, there were zombies…

That’s how it all started. Authors have created a major problem with stories like Cinder, The Dark Queen, and Asleep, and it’s wreaking havoc here in Ever After. Our queens are fighting for their lives.

Rather like Mother Nature, keeper of the fine balance that’s life in your world, tales that begin with “Once upon a time” were never meant to be messed with.

Now, Ariel is underwater with all the defenses she’s been launching, Aurora hasn’t slept in weeks, and Rapunzel is tangled in… Well, I can’t even begin to tell you.

Rather than try, I’ll let you see for yourself. You and I will talk again afterward—if I survive long enough. So, as our fateful story begins:

Once upon a time, in a land far, far away…

Review of 13 Ways to Midnight by Rue Volley

Echo Navarri is the surviving daughter of famous Archaeologists, she was unable to prevent the death of her twin sister Midnight during a tragic accident.  She is haunted with guilt at not being able to do more for her sister and her parents feel it’s best for her to go and live with her Aunt in Port Royal.  Here her world is turned upside down, the free spirited, home schooled traveller is pushed into school with the typical bitchy girls and one particularly hot guy, Thorn.  Enigmatic, elusive and more dangerous to Echo’s emotional well being that she could ever realise.

This is a beautifully written book and ticks all the boxes for the genre.  Echo is clearly struggling with the loss of her twin and forcing her into the mainstream world is a hard transition for her.  Her Aunt though is a revelation and she always brightens each scene she appears in, giving a hint of Grandfather from The Lost Boys.  She is no nonsense and laugh out loud at times, but her story is secretly more tragic than Echo could ever have realised.  Port Royal is not quite home sweet home, there is more than a hint of the supernatural and dangerous goings on, the cause of the constant grey sky, is a sad tale of legend.

The story never comes right out and explains things to you, things are far from tied up in a neat little bow and found myself repeatedly guessing ahead, thinking I knew what was coming, but my suspicions were never confirmed.  For me there was a lot going on in this story without a great deal really happening.  Plenty was being set up and lots of characters were introduced but it was kind of unsatisfying at the cliffhanger ending.  I wanted to know more about the Veil and the creature in the woods, it would have been nice as well to have understood more about the history between the 2 main families, as well as an underlying feeling for me that there may be some more of Midnights story to come.

This is a very accomplished story, with much to appeal to the teen audience and fans of the genre.  The writing is flawless and it’s a series which holds a lot of promise.

Review of Awaken by Michelle Bryan

Awakened is set in a world in the not too distant future, an apocalyptic event has caused the desolation of the cities and sources of power, although we are not told what the event was the existence of “muties” leads you to believe it wasn’t a natural disaster.  People survive in small homestead style villages, small shacks in a barren land known as the Sandlands.  This is where we meet Tara, our protagonist.  She has a touch of Katniss about her, she is far from a girlie girl, hunting and providing, we meet her on her Born Day which starts out like any ordinary day, however, an event turns her world upside down forcing her to leave her home searching for missing friends with only a cryptic message about a destination to guide her.  Tara is told that she is special but she isn’t told how, but her journey will be sure to give her answers.  The journey takes her to places – many that take her from her path and despite setting out alone there are those met along the way who both help and hinder her in her quest.  Nothing however, could prepare her for the knowledge of just how special she truly is.

For me there was so much to love about this book, the ideas and the story were utterly page turning.  I loved the throwbacks to settler relics, the things you or I would take for granted today and the Tyrion esq of Tater, the dwarf who she meets on her journey.  The story flows well but the chapters are very very long, so there is no chance of reading a quick chapter if you have 10 minutes to yourself!  I loved the interplay between the characters and despite the long chapters the story was always relevant and punchy, the dialogue thoughtful.   However (and there is sadly a but) I have to say i struggled with Tara’s accent, I have no issue with characters having an accent, if you’re told you can voice it how you like, but the way Tara has been written, you are forced to read in her voice.  As a Brit, reading Cain’t instead of Can’t (and similarly) was very jarring and really made it difficult to read at times and as Tara is the main character this happened often. At the start I really felt it would break the book for me, but as more and more characters are introduced the jarring became less frequent and I was really able to get absorbed into this wonderful yet harsh world.

This gets a 4 out of 5 stars from me.
