Review of Hostile (Book 4 in the Afterlight Saga – by Cameo Renae

Hostile is the fourth book in the Afterlight Saga and one of the things I love is that the books all directly roll on from one another without distraction or break.  At the end of Intransigent, Abi and her family had escaped the bunker and found themselves falling into the generous hands of Billy who invited them to join him and his hive.  WIth Milton on the mend, Abi is able to finish her course of treatments, a goal she is desperate to realise as she knows that she’s on borrowed time until she is discovered and puts her old and new family at risk of execution.  Once complete she decides to make good her escape and sets off alone.  Sadly those searching for her don’t take long to find their mark, but with more than just Arvies on their tail, can they afford to keep Abi as a prisoner or will they be forced to trust her and bring her into the ranks?  With the discovery of a potential game changer along the way, will Abi still remain a priority and can she find a way back to Finn and her family?

There is an absolute ton of stuff going on with this instalment; where Intransigent was very focu

sed, Hostile takes us out into the big wide world again where miraculously some survivors are still surviving and there are things just as bad as the Arvies lurking in the shadows. With Abi’s serum course completed she finds that she is opened up to more than being just a killing machine, but the power she holds is desperate to come to the surface with her trying desperately to keep it at bay.  The power to harm also has the power to heal potentially placing her in greater danger if the powers that be come to understand the true extent of what she has become.   Whilst I was initially a little let down with how easily Abi had allowed herself to be captured that was quickly replaced as little by little she starts to gain the upper hand and of course the story would have taken a very different turn if she remained undiscovered!  This continues to be a strong series and again I read it in less than a day as it drew me in completely.  There was only one little part for me which I wasn’t too keen on, but with it only being 2 pages out of the 4 books, i’m not letting it impact on how much I loved reading Hostile.  I’m just glad I don’t have to wait too long for book 5!

E.M. Rinaldi lives in Charlotte, North Carolina with her boyfriend, Milz, and their slightly psychotic pup, Boone. By day she is a Registered Radiologic Technologist taking pictures of mangled bones and by night she writes about all the bizarre situations her characters get themselves into while she was away. She is a Second Degree Blackbelt and can’t write a story without at least one fight scene in it.
When she’s not writing, or trapped at work, E.M. likes to read (obsessively), clear her DVR, and have all night Buffy marathons with her friends, complete with cookies and cinnamon rolls.
Her love for writing stems from an early age where she would create stories on an old computer program and force anyone within grabbing distance to read them. Not much has changed; be warned: stay out of grabbing distance.
Evading the Dark is her debut novel and the first of The Cross Chronicles.

Review of Dark Dreams and Dead Things by Martina McAtee

We are back in Belle Haven as the Belladonna pack are dealing with the fallout from book 1, Mace has gone and Quinn is Mace, leading to even more fractured relations between Ember and Tristin.  Meddling in the balance, the natural order of things, has led to more tragedy as the wrongs are righted and the pack find themselves despised.  There is little time for mourning however as unnatural things start to happen, unusual deaths and gruesome displays send the pack down a path so full of twists and turns no-one can be sure who can really be trusted.   The pack are keeping too many secrets from one another, leading them to become isolated from themselves.  But they are forced to come together again though in the face of a new foe, a foe hunting and murdering packs and the Belladonna Pack is next in line.

Whilst book 1 left me struggling at times with wide array of characters, when I started book 2 that all fell away and I felt as if I was back with old friends. I fell into an easy rhythm with the book that I very quickly was unable to put down and found myself reading at every spare moment I got.   I’m a massive sucker usually for a prologue and the flashback sections in relation to Mace really fed into that, I loved the background to his time in Victorian London, and getting to learn about how he became the Mace we know now.  The fractured relationship between Ember and Tristin is realised with great sensitivity as the two struggle to come to terms with the people they love sharing the same body.  Rhys and Kai hold the story together in my view, throughout everything that is going on and the deep regret and sadness coursing through the pack, their blossoming love story becomes full blown and helps ground the story from becoming too sombre at times.

The writing and the story very much felt like it was coming in waves building up to several nail biting climaxes which were either followed by joy, relief or more anxiety and I loved how it built you up for the final devastating endgame.   I felt as though plenty of time was spent on each character allowing me to get to know them better, which perhaps was what I was missing during book 1. I felt a connection with all of them which I loved as it meant that across the 500+ pages none of the story felt surplus.

I feel that I have been a bit vague in my synopsis, but there is just so much going on with this that I would be talking for pages (and believe me I could) and I would struggle to avoid spoilers.  It really takes you to so many places with such strong imagery throughout that you can’t help but become emotionally invested.

This is an amazing follow up to Children Shouldn’t Play with Dead Things, the voice and style of the writing were right up my street and to be honest I’m left feeling a little lost now I’m finished.

Review of Intransigent – Book 3 in the After Light Saga by Cameo Renae

We pick up where we left off at the end of Sanctum, the family are reunited in the last helicopter transport and are heading towards the Government bunker.  Abi is happy to be back in the arms of her family and everything is set to be ok!  However, a throwaway comment by Abi about her ability to hear the Arvies, is her undoing.  The government bunker has been searching for people just like her to become part of their “Reader Programme” and the pilot immediately calls in with a success story that a Reader has been found.  Once at the bunker she finds herself forced away from her family and Finn and placed into segregation with other the readers with only weekly contact allowed with those she loves if she’s lucky.  Twins Chloe and Chase and a Dr Simon are the only other readers who have been found and it’s immediately apparent that their abilities are far weaker than Abi’s.  The Reader Programme however, is soon found to be nothing short of human drug trials which Abi is unable to escape from.  Abi finds herself surrounded by lies and is challenged by her own instinct as to who she can trust.  She must keep her head though as to upset the balance through failure to comply with the rules, will lead to ejection from the bunker and her labelled Intransigent.  However when the drug trials open her mind to a level no one could ever have imagined, will she ever be able to leave?

The cinematic quality of this series continues and again I was left imagining it as a movie as the pages turned.   Intransigent though is the most insular section of the series so far but it loses nothing for it.  The story is almost entirely within the science department of the bunker, but this works well as it helps to give you a sense of Abi’s isolation from her family and friends.  By not showing their part of the story it adds extra depth to the read as whilst you are along for the ride with Abi, you are still left wondering what life must be like outside in the main area with the others.  How are they being treated?  What are they doing?  It is a complete page turner and every chapter is brimming with information and activity and things move quickly as Abi’s treatment pushes her to the limit far more speedily than with any other reader so far.  The climactic points are major with real wow moments, and the story goes in a darker direction that I wasn’t expecting, but loved nevertheless!

It’s no surprise that I loved this book, the first 2 were 5 star reads for me and this did not disappoint, in fact I think i’m going to have to start Hostile straight away!
