Review of 7: The Seven Deadly Sins by the Ferocious 5 (Aka Jo Michaels, Tia Bach, Kelly Risser, Nichole Greene and Casey Bond)

Whilst I would usually start my reviews with a synopsis I am struggling to know where to start, such are the twists in this tale.  7 parts in total, 5 are the stories of a life belonging to a man named Thomas; the other 2, well you’ll just have to wait and see – but they are a whole load of WOW!   Each life of Thomas, from ancient Rome to ghetto New York weaves a story beset with emotion, choices and chances.  It becomes clear that every incarnation of Thomas reflects a man with many loves, failings and achievements, some of which will ultimately become his potential downfall.  Whilst the obvious link between the stories is Thomas, you know there is something else, something which becomes clear a few stories in.  The link between his loves is subtle but enough to make you realise there is more to come.

Ultimately 7 is a tale of redemption, but why does Thomas need to be redeemed? Faced with the sins of his past lives, does Thomas have the capacity to repent and can he really face the truth of the choices he has made and the truth of what has led him to the culmination of part 6.

7 really made me think, really made me consider how the 7 deadly sins feed into our lives without even realising.  Part 6 starts on a bombshell and then drops a whole load of “say what?” on top of it.  It’s a huge turning point and really brings ideology into focus. I especially love the eponymous twist of the authors names in the tale, it really bring a different dimension to it.

In short if you are after a tale with a difference, a tale which will make you think and a tale that may make you take a closer look at the way you live you life, you will not be disappointed with 7.

Frayed Fairytales Season 1 (Episode 2) by the Ferocious 5

We’re on to episode 2 and our Rose has really got herself whipped up into a mess.  So consumed by Drina’s offer and her chance to be a mother, her mind is clouded to the potential dangers that she rejects the offers of help and counsel from her friends.  The castle is on lock down and the countdown to Drina’s ultimatum is on!

As a mother it’s hard not to feel for Rose in this situation.  Consumed by an obsession,  her wants and needs surpass all others and disastrous consequences are bound to ensue.  Her too late discovery adds a sense of heart pounding urgency and you just know that next cliff hanger is coming.

There are some lovely touches in this episode, I loved the throwback to CS Lewis when Rose enters the wardrobe and the almost ethereal quality to Amelia’s admission about having been able to control the guards actions for some time.  Amelia is my one to watch in this series, I’m hoping for great things from her!

Whilst I love the idea behind the episodic releases, it going to drive me crazy waiting for each one to come out!  If you leave with one thing from this review that will make you want to read this it’s this…. Demon Dwarfs….

Frayed Fairytales – Season 1 (Epidode 1) by the Ferocious 5!

Happily Ever Afters are meant to be just that surely? For Snow White maybe – she got her fairytale ending. But for her sister Rose Red things aren’t as perfect as they could be. Yes, she has an amazing husband and they love each other deeply but their family needs completing and Rose becomes consumed with the need for a child, a need that can’t be filled by babysitting again for Snow. A chance meeting in the market leads her to a darker path to reach her goal, unsuspectingly – she’s always had a little magic but can she put her faith in it completely?

Rose’s story is Season one of Frayed Fairy Tales, the seasons are split into episodes – just like your favourite TV show! This episode took me around half an hour to read and left me on a massive cliffy – again like your favourite TV show 🙂 I love this format and that the episodes will be being released close together so you can either read them when the episodes come out or save them up and have a binge read!

I loved the fact that her story has a real life edge to it and that Rose’s struggle is one that many can probably relate to and I get the feeling that this edginess will continue throughout all the books. As a starter this really has me hooked in and i’m excited not just for the next Episode in Rose’s season but for all the stories I know are to come!

“Mason, MASON, MASON!” Skylar panicked.
“I know. Skylar, hold on tight. I’m going to brake.”
“But there are cars behind us.”
“We have no choice. Don’t worry. I got this.” Mason pushed down on the brake forcefully. The car hydroplaned to the right. “Hold on.”
Skylar gripped the first thing her hand found. The water from the road jetted up into the air like in a water show, but the car kept gliding sideways, until finally it spun in a full circle and stopped. With no time to waste, Mason turned it to the right and accelerated, hoping to dodge what was coming toward them.
Out of nowhere, a long piece of ice, taking the form of a spear, darted through the trucks’ tires and punctured some of them. More ice spears came soaring out of the rain, but this time ten or more sphere-like ice balls followed, denting the sides of the trucks. One went through a windshield. With flat tires, the trucks now glided as if skating on ice, maneuvering from side to side.
“Did you do that?” Skylar asked excitedly.
“No. Must be Poseidon’s kids. Where the hell are they?” Mason spread his right arm out in front of Skylar as if to protect her. “Bend down, Sky.”
One of the trucks hit another and veered off, hitting yet another one. The crash caused the trucks to flip and tumble, heading straight for Mason’s car. With a look of shock, Skylar held her breath. There was no time to move, think, or get out of the car, so she closed her eyes and prepared for the crash.
Seconds before impact, Mason’s car flew up into the air and over the trucks. Somehow, as if by magic, the water created a liquid bridge, guiding the car safely over, and then it thumped hard onto the ground on the other side. Without looking back, Mason sped away as the sound of screeching brakes and metal hitting metal blasted behind them.
“What just happened?” Skylar yelped. “Did you do that?” Everything had happened so fast. Adrenaline had rushed through her body so rapidly, she’d had no time for fear. Once it was over, she was amazed and stunned speechless.
“No, I didn’t. Poseidon’s kids. It’s the only explanation. They can manipulate water. I had it handled. There was no need for them to show off. Lots of civilians are hurt.” Mason sounded irritated, perhaps because he wasn’t the hero this time around or perhaps he truly did care for those people he didn’t know.
Amazed by their abilities, wherever they were, Skylar was grateful for their showing off. Though Mason claimed he’d had the situation handled, Skylar thought otherwise, but kept her opinion to herself.
Fire and heavy smoke spiraled into the sky behind them. The trucks had mostly slammed against each other, except for one. Guilt consumed her, thinking about the innocent people who’d happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. She couldn’t dwell on her remorse. She saw the same white truck, now joined by a black truck, tailing them. “It’s the white truck again, but there’s another one behind it.”
“I see them,” Mason said with a sly tone, looking in the rearview mirror. “Let’s see if they can follow.”

Title: The Battle for Earth
Author: AJ & CS Sparber
Genre: YA/NA Paranormal Fantasy
Cover Designer: Regina Wamba at Mae I Design & Photography
Publisher: Mind’s Eye Press
Blurb:
The Jacuzzi tub is not quite up to Olympian standards, but the hot, churning water feels amazing. In a way, the turbulence reminds me of what my life has become. In little more than a year, I’ve gone from being a high school senior to an angel—a member of the angelic royal family, to be precise.
My transformation has brought with it a fair share of adventures—I killed a fallen angel. I healed my best friend from what would have been a fatal knife wound, turning her into an angel in the process. I fell in love with a Warrior angel, blissfully committing myself to him in a traditional angelic binding, only to see him nearly killed the very next day. Then I healed him—triggering a genetic change that made us the most powerful angels in existence. We are like two halves of a raging star. We are the most lethal creatures ever to walk the mortal worlds. We can fly like eagles, bend light to our will, and fill the sky with terrifying bolts of lightning. We hold the power of Thor’s hammer in our hands. We are the wrath of God. And it’s a good thing we are because fallen angels have declared war.
When it comes to being a husband and wife (or wife and husband) writing team, there are advantages, or benefits. Chief among them is that you get to practice the love scenes. He writes, she steers, and…well, it’s fun. He is a software designer and she is a doctor of education. AJ and CS Sparber live in the lovely town of Hudson, Ohio, with their son Ryan, their daughter Melanie, and the spirit of an Aussie shepherd named Hunter.

Chapter 12
Ari is Captured for the second time.
“There is nothing the Irish love more than a good story. But this…this tops them all,” Fiona says, as she pours me a second cup of coffee. Freshly showered and dressed comfortably in a halter top over spandex running pants, I scan my surroundings. The kitchen is small, but comfortable, and we’re still invisible behind a staged loop of security footage. I can’t help smiling at her enthusiasm, but its’s a bittersweet smile, because it’s nearly two in the morning, which means I get to play with Angela in about seven hours. “I’m not sure if I’ll be able to fight through the pain.”
Fiona leans forward, resting her elbows on the table. “I wish I could get you out of here tonight, but we need to take care of the implant. For our escape to succeed, you need to be at full strength.”
My patience is wearing thin. What if Fiona can’t get a remote? What if she can’t sneak a surgeon into my chambers? “How long before the security system comes back on?”
Fiona gives me a puzzled look. “I’m not sure. Any time between now and five o’clock. We’ll get a ten-minute heads up. Why do you ask?”
“I’m going to try to access my abilities.”
Fiona shakes her head vigorously. “That’s not a good idea, Ari.”
She’s probably right. I stand, crossing my arms over my chest. “So, are you going to help me or do I do this alone?”
“Ari, please…”
“I have to try.”
“You are one very headstrong angel,” she says with a smirk.
Sitting on the toilet lid, I stare at a small plastic wastebasket across the room. My objective is to knock it over without touching it, and in order to do that, I’ll need to use the Essence—which is going to trigger the implant, causing me a world of pain.
“You’ll never plow a field by turning it over in your mind,” Fiona says, with a smirk.
“Ha. You have no idea how much pain Angela’s little gizmo puts out. Now, quiet…I need to concentrate.”
Redoubling my efforts, I hyper focus on the basket. Breathe. I feel the familiar rush as the Essence collects in my cells, filling me with a pulsing energy—a force that begs to be released. But there is resistance. Something is impeding the outward flow, I think, as a wave of pain builds inside me. Thrusting a washcloth into my mouth, I bite down hard. A muffled roar rumbles from deep inside me as the pain intensifies. Fiona moves into my line of sight, her face twisted in panic. “Let it go, Ari! Release it…”
“Too much energy…MOVE” I shout, because I know it’s going to be bad. Really bad.
I release the beast inside me, because it can no longer be contained. Time slows down and I’m nothing more than a helpless observer, watching as the basket I’d been so intently focused on begins to vibrate. No, it’s not the basket…it’s the entire room. I scan my surroundings, trying to find Fiona, but a roiling cloud of debris obscures my vision. I made a hurriquake, I think, which causes me to giggle…and then an overwhelming sense of relief washes over me, because the pain is gone…and so is Fiona.
“Run, Ari!”
Fiona? I didn’t kill her!
I slowly rise to my feet, hanging onto the sink for support. Fiona is sitting, propped up against the far wall of the main room, pointing furiously behind me. I turn. People are jogging up the hall, past still bodies, toward me. I can see them because the wall is gone. What the…
A strong hand grips my arm and I pivot to break the vice-like grip, but I have no strength left. “Stay still or this will really hurt,” a chillingly familiar voice says.
“No!” I hear Fiona shout, but she’s being restrained by two huge angels. “Don’t hurt her!”
Before I can react or respond, a sharp prick causes me to flinch, as a needle enters the tender skin at the base of my neck.
“Goodnight, princess,” Eloy says with an evil chuckle.

Author Interview with Rebecca Jaycox

For this weeks spotlight we welcomed Rebecca Jaycox, despite being busy promoting The Other Queen, which was released at the beginning of the month, she graciously found time to take part in our author interview!

Q: For those that are new to Rebecca Jaycox, can you tell us a bit about yourself and your books? Rebecca: I’m from a small town in Missouri and have been living in NYC for the past 12 years.

Q: At what point in your life did you know you wanted to be a writer?
Rebecca: I was around 10 years old, and I discovered Star Wars. I’ve been writing every since.

Q: Tell us about your writing space, do you need calm and tranquility or do you have to have a playlist to keep you going?  Would you say you were more of a planner or a pantser?
Rebecca: I actually like having Netflix on in the background while I sit on my loveseat and write in my journal. Yes, I handwrite my books. I’m crazy. I’m a planner and a panster.

Q: The Other Queen was released this week and you held a bookstore launch, was that a great experience?
Rebecca: It was amazing! I had such great support.

Q: What are you currently working on or is it a secret!?
Rebecca: I’m working on my third book in the Inheritance series.

Q: For both The Other Inheritance and The Other Queen, there are some beautifully imagined scenery and set pieces, from the Airships to the inspired diving breathing apparatus, was creating the world of the other a world that came naturally to you or did involve a lot of research?
Rebecca: It was a world that mostly came naturally. I did look at some steampunk images to get some inspiration. I’m so glad you enjoyed my diving suit!

Q: Brwyn is perhaps one of the best characters I have ever read, did you set out to make him a reader’s favourite or did he develop into his role?
Rebecca: Thank you so much!! Brwyn was a happy accident. He didn’t even show up until the third draft of The Other Inheritance, and then he just took over.

Q: Following on from that, if you could be any one of your characters who would you choose? Rebecca: Hmmm, I think I would be Reggie. As much as I want to be Brwyn, I like being a woman. 😉

Q: What are you reading at the moment?
Rebecca: One Fell Sweep by Ilona Andrews

Q: Fictional Dinner Party – give me 5 fictional characters or authors who you would have as dinner companions 🙂
Rebecca: Ilona Andrews, Maggie Stiefvater, Patricia Briggs, Jim Butcher, and Anne Bishop.

Thank you so much for taking part Rebecca!
